The coastline shifts between dramatic and quietly beautiful within the space of a short drive. And the whole island has a pace to it that makes you slow down whether you planned to or not.

Getting to Isle of Skye: What to Expect from the Drive

The Isle of Skye sits off Scotland’s northwest coast, connected to the mainland by the Skye Bridge near Kyle of Lochalsh. It’s an island, but driving onto it feels seamless. You cross the bridge and suddenly you’re there.

From Edinburgh: Around 5 to 5.5 hours without stops. The first couple of hours are motorway and fairly unremarkable. Then the Highlands start to open up and the drive becomes something worth paying attention to. The landscape gets wider and less structured, and you start to feel like you’re actually going somewhere.

From London: Most people fly into Edinburgh or Glasgow and drive from there. Edinburgh is slightly closer to Skye. Either way, this trip works well as a long weekend if you travel on Thursday evening or take Friday as a travel day.

A few practical things before you go:

• Fill up your tank before crossing the Skye Bridge. Petrol stations do exist on the island, mainly around Portree, but they’re spaced out and you don’t want to be calculating fuel near Neist Point.

• Download offline maps before you leave. Signal drops regularly once you move away from the main towns, and some of the best spots on Skye are in areas with no coverage at all.

• Build in extra time for single track roads. Much of Skye’s road network is narrow, operating on passing places rather than proper lanes. The further west you drive, the more patience it requires. It’s part of the charm, but factor it into your timing and don’t try to rush it.

• Leave early. A 7 am start from Edinburgh gives you flexibility for scenic stops, avoids heavier traffic through the Central Belt, and means you arrive on Skye with daylight still in your favor.

Best Time to Visit Isle of Skye

Skye looks different in every season, and it has a genuine appeal in all of them. Light and weather shape the experience far more than the calendar does. That said, if you’re working around a UK long weekend, a few windows stand out.

Late May is one of the strongest times to visit. Days are long, the trails are quieter, and the island hasn’t hit its summer peak yet. You get the quality of light without the crowds.

June to August brings the longest days. Sunsets stretch past 10 pm in June, which is extraordinary. The trade-off is busier car parks, trails that fill early in the morning, and accommodation that books out months in advance. If summer is your only choice, plan early starts and book everything well ahead of time.

September sits in a sweet spot. Visitor numbers ease off noticeably, the quality of light in autumn on Skye is genuinely beautiful, and the island feels calmer. Weather is less predictable, so pack with that in mind and build some flexibility into your days.

One thing everyone mentions but still catches people out: midges. These tiny biting insects emerge from late May through summer, particularly near still water and at dusk. They’re not dangerous, but they’re genuinely annoying. Carry repellent and avoid standing near rivers when the wind drops in the evenings.

For most UK travelers planning a long weekend, late May or early September offers the best balance of daylight, manageable crowds, and reasonable weather.

Where to Stay: Why Your Base Matters More Than You Think

Skye is larger than most people expect, around 50 miles from north to south, and driving between opposite corners on single track roads takes considerably longer than it looks on a map. Choosing the right base will shape how relaxed your entire trip feels.

Three areas come up most often when people are planning where to stay:

• Portree is the island’s main town and has the most amenities. Restaurants, cafes, a supermarket, independent shops. If having things on your doorstep matters to you, it’s a solid choice. The downside is its position in the north, which makes the western highlights a longer drive each day.

• Sligachan sits at the center of the island, right at the foot of the Cuillin mountains. For a three-day itinerary covering both north and west Skye, it’s the most practical base. It’s also where we stayed, and it made the whole trip flow.

• Dunvegan, on the west coast, is quieter and well placed for Neist Point and Coral Beach. Better suited to travelers who want a remote feel and don’t mind driving further to reach the northern spots.

Sligachan Hotel: The Base That Made the Trip

I want to be specific about this rather than vague, because the right base genuinely changes a trip like this.

Sligachan Hotel sits directly beneath the Black Cuillin, one of the most dramatic mountain ranges in the British Isles. You notice the mountains the moment you arrive. They fill the skyline behind the hotel completely. In front of the hotel, the river pools near the old stone bridge mirror the peaks on still mornings. It’s the setting that makes you feel like you’ve actually arrived somewhere, rather than just checked into somewhere.

From Sligachan, the driving distances work out cleanly for a three-day itinerary:

• Old Man of Storr: around 35 minutes north
• Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls: around 40 minutes north
• Portree: around 25 minutes
• Neist Point: around 1 hour 15 minutes west
• Fairy Pools: around 15 minutes south

That central position meant each day had a clear direction. North on day two, west on day three. No crossing the island back and forth, no unnecessarily long drives at the end of big days. Evenings felt genuinely restful.

Seumas’ Bar inside the hotel deserves its own mention. It has been welcoming walkers, climbers, and travelers since 1987, and it holds over 400 whiskies, earning a place as a finalist for SLTN Whisky Bar of the Year 2025. After a full day out on Skye’s trails and coastline, there is genuinely nowhere better to settle in for the evening. A dram, a warm meal, mountain views fading outside. It becomes the place you look ahead to returning to each night.

Breakfast at Sligachan is worth noting too. Wide windows looking directly onto the Cuillin peaks, an unhurried pace, and no reason to rush. Every morning felt like the right way to start a day in the Highlands.

3-Day Isle of Skye Itinerary

Day 1: The Drive Up, Eilean Donan, and Arriving on Skye

Edinburgh to Eilean Donan Castle to Skye Bridge to Sligachan

Leave Edinburgh early, if you can manage it. The drive through the Highlands rewards an early start, and arriving on Skye with daylight still ahead of you gives you an afternoon to settle in properly rather than just unpacking in the dark.

Around four hours into the drive, stop at Eilean Donan Castle. It sits where three sea lochs meet, surrounded by mountains and open water on every side. Even before you step out of the car, the setting is unmistakably, deeply Scottish. We spent about an hour walking the grounds and crossing the stone bridge. It’s the stop that helps you decompress from driving and settle into the pace of the Highlands before you reach the island.

Eilean Donan practical info:

• Address: Dornie, Kyle of Lochalsh, IV40 8DX
• Parking: Large on-site car park. Around £3 for 2 hours during castle opening hours. Free outside opening times.
• Entry: Castle interior is ticketed (around £12 adults, £6.50 children). Walking the grounds and crossing the bridge is free.
• Opening hours vary by season. Check the official Eilean Donan website before visiting.
• Note: Backpacks and large bags are not permitted inside the castle. Free lockers are available at the visitor centre.

After Eilean Donan, you cross the Skye Bridge and something shifts. The landscape gets more rugged. The road toward Sligachan takes you through a valley where mountains gradually rise on either side.

We arrived at Sligachan in the afternoon, and it instantly felt calm. Mountains behind the hotel, the river in front – just simple and peaceful..

Before dinner, walk five minutes to Old Sligachan Bridge. The river runs through shallow pools beneath the stone arch, and when the water is still, the Cuillin mountains reflect clearly on the surface. It’s one of those places that doesn’t need effort to feel special. It just does.

There’s also a local tradition worth trying: dipping your face in the river for seven seconds is said to bring eternal beauty. The water is cold enough to make you genuinely hesitate. We did it anyway.

We ended the evening at Seumas’ Bar inside Sligachan Hotel. Warm food, good whisky, mountain views fading outside. After a day like that, it felt exactly right.

Day 2: North Skye, The Storr, Kilt Rock, and Portree

Don’t skip breakfast. The hotel offers Wide windows with great view of the Cuillin mountain. This is one of the quieter pleasures of staying at Sligachan and it sets the tone for the day.

The drive to Old Man of Storr takes around 35 minutes, and the coastline starts appearing in glimpses between the hills as you approach. The hike climbs steadily. It’s not technical and doesn’t need any experience, but you feel the incline as you gain height. With each turn of the path, the view behind you opens a little wider. The landscape starts to feel genuinely expansive.

Getting there isn’t easy. By the time the Old Man of Storr finally comes into view, your legs definitely feel it. But that first proper look makes you stop for a minute – it’s one of those moments where you forget you’re tired. The scale of it is genuinely hard to process. I took too many photos trying to catch it and none of them came close.

Old Man of Storr practical info:

• Postcode: IV51 9HX
• Parking: £6 per car for up to 6 hours, £7 for up to 12 hours. Pay by card or cash at the machine on site. Free outside the hours of 8 am to 8 pm.
• Toilets on site, free of charge. A small kiosk operates across the road in summer.
• Two route options from the car park: a gentler Discovery Route (left fork, 30 to 40 minutes) and a steeper Direct Route (right fork, 20 to 30 minutes). The Discovery Route has better signage and is easier for first-timers.
• Camper vans are not permitted in the main car park due to height restrictions.

Get there early. This is the most visited spot on Skye, and the car park fills quickly on summer mornings. Arriving before 8 am in peak season means free parking, a quieter trail, and much better morning light.

From the Storr, continue north to Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls. This stop requires almost no walking, but the impact is immediate. Vertical cliffs drop straight into the sea directly in front of you, with the waterfall pouring over the edge beside them. On windier days, the spray lifts back up toward the cliff face. It takes around 20 minutes and is absolutely worth the stop.

Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls practical info:

• Postcode: IV51 9JE
• Parking: Dedicated car park on site. £6 for the day, paid by card or cash at the machine.
• No toilets at the viewpoint. Nearest facilities are in Staffin village, around 2 miles north.
• A small snack bar operates in the car park during summer months.

The waterfall is most dramatic after a period of rainfall. In a dry summer, the flow can reduce significantly.

By late afternoon, head to Portree Harbour. After a big day on exposed trails and clifftops, the harbour feels calm and human-scaled. Colourful houses line the waterfront, there are good cafes and independent shops nearby, and the pace slows naturally. We walked along the harbour, stopped for a warm drink, and took our time before heading towards the hotel..

Highland Coos

No visit to the Isle of Skye is complete without seeing a Highland coo, and the best place to find them is Hector’s Highland Coos in Sconser, just five minutes from Sligachan Hotel. It is an open farm with fencing along the road, and you can get genuinely close to these animals, which is exactly as good as it sounds. They are huge, fluffy, and completely unbothered by visitors, which makes the whole experience feel surprisingly special for what is essentially pulling over on the side of the road.

Look out for the Hector’s Highland Coos signs along the A87 and pull into the small layby on the western side of the road. The coos are often near the gate, though as farm animals they have no set schedule and wander wherever they please. If you want the best chance of seeing them up close, go in the morning just after feeding time. They tend to be much closer to the fence then.

Please be respectful when you visit. Wait quietly and they will often wander over on their own terms. Also please drop a few pounds in the donation box on site. The farmer lets visitors pull onto his private property for free, and that generosity is worth supporting.

Highland Cow Parking Area, Sconser, Isle of Skye IV48 8TD

Returning to the same hotel each evening gave the trip a satisfying structure. No repacking, no navigating unfamiliar roads in the dark.

Day 3: West Skye, Neist Point, and the Fairy Pools

Sligachan to Neist Point to Fairy Pools and depart

This is the biggest driving day, so starting early makes everything feel more relaxed. The further west you go, the more the island empties out and the more remote it feels.

The road to Neist Point narrows significantly in the final stretch. Sheep graze at the roadside. You use passing places regularly. The Atlantic starts to feel near before you can actually see it. From the car park, the path leads down toward the lighthouse, and what opens up in front of you is one of the most dramatic coastal views in the UK. The cliffs fall steeply into the sea on either side. The Atlantic stretches wide ahead.

The walk down is gentle. The climb back up is steady and noticeable, so take your time and pace yourself. The total round trip is around 1.7 miles. Getting here early in summer means having space to actually take it in, rather than navigating around groups.

Neist Point practical info:

• Postcode: IV55 8WU
• Parking: Free. Large car park at the end of the road. No height restrictions.
• No toilet facilities on site. Nearest public toilets are in Dunvegan village.
• No cafe or amenities. The road into Neist Point is single track with potholes in places, so drive carefully.
• The iconic overhead view (rightmost photo below) of the lighthouse requires a short walk northwest from the car park on a slightly boggy path. This is separate from the main path that leads down to the lighthouse itself.

Later in the morning, drive to the Fairy Pools at the base of the Cuillin mountains. The walk follows the river through a series of waterfalls and clear pools that, in softer light, take on a vivid blue-green color that genuinely looks too good to be real. It’s one of the most accessible highlights on Skye, mostly flat and well-maintained, and it’s a beautiful way to end the trip at the foot of the same mountains you’ve been waking up to all weekend.

Fairy Pools practical info:

• Postcode: Glenbrittle, IV47 8TA
• Parking: Around £6 per car for the day, paid by card, Apple Pay, or cash on site. The car park holds around 120 spaces. Motor homes use a separate lower section.
• Toilets available on site. Car park attendants will guide you to a space during busy periods.
• The walk to the first waterfall takes around 20 minutes from the car park. Allow 1 to 2 hours for the full return walk, longer if you want to reach the upper pools.

By mid-afternoon, we were back at Sligachan to collect our bags. If there’s any time before you leave, go back to the river one more time. It’s worth it.

What to Eat and Drink on Isle of Skye

The food scene on Skye is better than most people expect, and worth building into your plans rather than treating as an afterthought.

What to Pack for Isle of Skye

Packing right makes a real difference on Skye. The weather can change completely within an hour, and several of the walks involve exposed ground that feels very different in wind and rain versus sunshine.

The non-negotiable are a proper waterproof jacket (not just a showerproof layer), waterproof trousers, and waterproof walking boots. Warm mid-layers are worth having even in summer. A small day pack for carrying water, snacks, and extra layers is useful for the longer walks.

Is 3 Days Enough for Isle of Skye?

Yes, if you plan your route carefully and base yourself centrally.

In 3 days, you’ll cover the island’s most iconic landscapes: the Cuillin mountains, the northern coastline, the western cliffs, and the river valleys in between. What you won’t do is see everything. Skye genuinely rewards slower travel, and most people who visit once start thinking about when they’re coming back before they’ve even left.

If you have extra time, the Quiraing is a spectacular landscape in the north of the island that didn’t make this itinerary but absolutely should be on a longer visit. Dunvegan Castle, Coral Beach, The Fairy Glen, and the Cuillin ridge itself for more experienced hikers are all worth exploring when time allows.

For a first visit, 3 days gives you a strong and genuinely immersive introduction without feeling overwhelming.

But why choose Salzburg? Let’s start with a bit about the city itself. The name Salzburg means – Salt Fortress. This comes from its rich history of salt mining, which played a big role in the city’s development and wealth. In fact, salt was once so valuable it was called “white gold”. Salzburg is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It sits at the foot of the Eastern Alps and is known for its stunning views, narrow alleyways, and historic castles.

In this guide, I’ll share the best things to do in Salzburg. And if you have a little more time, I’ll also include a quick trip to Hallstatt – often called the most beautiful village in Europe.

Day 1 – Exploring the Old Town, Historic Sights & Local Beer

We took a direct flight from London to Salzburg. From the airport, we caught a bus to our hotel, which was located very close to the main train station. We stayed at Cocoon Salzburg – a lovely, cosy hotel with a warm and welcoming vibe. After relaxing, we headed out on foot to explore the Old Town.

Altstadt and Getreidegasse

One of the best things about Salzburg is that the city is very walkable. Most of the main sights are close to each other, so you can easily explore everything on foot. We started our walk through the Salzburg’s Old Town (Altstadt) – one of the most charming parts of the city. This area is full of baroque buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and beautiful squares. As we walked deeper into the Old Town, we came across the Alter Markt (Old Market), a lively square that dates back to the Middle Ages. It’s a great spot to grab a coffee, people-watch, or browse through local shops.

From there, we strolled down Getreidegasse, one of Salzburg’s most famous and picturesque shopping streets. It’s lined with traditional wrought-iron signs, boutique stores, cafés, and souvenir shops. This street is also where you’ll find the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at Getreidegasse 9 – a must-see for music lovers and history buffs.

Salzburg Cathedral, Residenzplatz, Mozartplatz

After that we headed to Salzburg Cathedral (Salzburger Dom) – a magnificent cathedral and one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. This is where Mozart was baptized. The interior is stunning, with impressive frescoes, soaring ceilings, and a peaceful atmosphere. You can also visit the crypt underneath, which adds to the cathedral’s rich history.

Just a short walk from the cathedral is Residenzplatz, one of the largest and most beautiful squares in the city. Tall, old buildings surround the square, and a big baroque fountain called Residenzbrunnen sits in the middle. It looks like it could be from Italy.

From there, we made our way to Mozartplatz, a nearby square that features a statue of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart right in the center. It’s a quiet, open space where you can reflect on Salzburg’s rich musical heritage. We rested there for a while to grab a coffee and enjoy music from local artists playing in front of the Mozart statue.

It was almost evening by this time so we strolled towards the Salzach River and crossed the Makartsteg Bridge, commonly known as Salzburg’s Love Lock Bridge. Couples have filled the bridge with colorful padlocks, and it gives one of the best views of the Old Town, with the fortress rising in the background

We passed through neighbourhoods where houses cling directly to the steep rock cliffs, creating a dramatic and beautiful backdrop. It’s such a fascinating blend of natural landscape and city design.

Augustiner Bräu

We made our way to the famous Augustiner Bräu, Salzburg’s oldest brewery, located in the Mülln district. Founded in 1621 by Augustinian monks, this brewery is an absolute must-visit for beer lovers. The atmosphere is traditional and lively. You walk in, grab a ceramic beer mug from the wooden shelves, rinse it at the fountain, and take it to the counter where fresh beer is poured straight from wooden barrels.

Inside, you’ll find a large beer hall and an open-air garden, both full of locals and tourists alike. There’s also a food arcade where different stalls serve Austrian favourites like pretzels, sausages, roast pork, schnitzel, potato salad, chicken and sweet treats. It’s self-service, so you can mix and match as you like. After dinner and a couple of mugs of beer, we walked back to our hotel (Cocoon Salzburg) which took us around 20 mins to reach.

Day 2 – Fortress Hohensalzburg, St. Peter’s Abbey, Kapitelplatz and Mirabell Gardens

For Day 2, you can either take a quick detour and go to Hallstatt or explore more of the city. We went to Hallstatt on Day 2 and stayed there for a day and then covered the remaining places in Salzburg on Day 3.

Funicular and Fortress Hohensalzburg

Our first stop of the day was the fortress but before heading up to the fortress, we made a quick stop at Fabi’s Frozen Yogurt, a lovely little spot on Universitätspl. They offer a variety of flavours and fun toppings – there is always a huge queue outside their shop so you can imagine how famous it is.

Then, we made our way to Festungsbahn Funicular which takes you up to the impressive Fortress Hohensalzburg in under a minute. It’s an easy ride with great views over the rooftops of Salzburg.

You can hike up instead if you’re feeling energetic, but the funicular saves time and gives you a nice scenic start to the fortress visit. Located high above the city, Fortress Hohensalzburg is one of Europe’s largest and best-preserved medieval castles. Originally built in 1077, it has centuries of history packed into its walls. Inside, we visited the medieval state rooms, the small fortress museum, and the quirky Marionette Museum. The panoramic views from the top are spectacular – you can see the Old Town, the Salzach River, and the surrounding Alps.

We stopped for lunch at the fortress restaurant, which offers terrace seating with amazing views over the city. Here you can try traditional Austrian food and dessert especially Salzburger nockerl.

St. Peter’s Abbey & The Old Mill Bakery

After coming back down, we visited St. Peter’s Abbey, one of the oldest monasteries in the area – it dates all the way back to the 7th century. Right next to it is a beautiful cemetery with old gravestones, colourful flowers, and a very calm atmosphere. You can also explore the catacombs, which are carved into the rock above the graves. You have to climb some stairs to see the catacombs but it is really interesting and is open daily except on public holidays.

Near the abbey, we found the Stiftsbäckerei St. Peter, one of the oldest bakeries in Europe. It still uses a traditional water-powered mill to grind grain, and they bake fresh bread using centuries-old methods. I would definitely recommend to try the breads from there. Unfortunately, the bakery was closed when we arrived there.

Kapitelplatz

Next, we walked through Kapitelplatz, a lively square at the foot of the fortress. Here you’ll find the famous golden sphere sculpture – a large golden ball with a statue of a man standing on top. It’s a fun photo spot, and the square often has street performers or small market stalls depending on the season.

Mirabell Gardens

To wrap up the day, we crossed the river and visited the Mirabell Gardens – a beautifully designed garden filled with fountains, flowers, and statues. It’s peaceful and perfect for a late afternoon stroll. It’s also famous for being featured in a scene from ‘The Sound of Music’ movie.

Since we had spent the previous night in Hallstatt, we returned to Salzburg and checked into the Leonardo Hotel Salzburg. It’s a modern and comfortable hotel close to the city centre, perfect for a short stay. The rooms were clean and cosy, and it was a great base for ending our Salzburg trip.

Day 1: Lulworth Cove & Durdle Door

Stop 1: Lulworth Cove – Postcode: BH20 5RS

This unique horseshoe-shaped bay is a geological wonder, offering crystal-clear waters and stunning cliff backdrops. It’s a sight you won’t want to miss on your Dorset road trip. We left London at 8 AM, aiming to make the most of our day. If you’re planning a similar route, plug BH20 5RS into your SatNav or Google Maps. The drive takes about 3.5 to 4 hours, depending on how many coffee or toilet breaks you take along the way. We stopped once for a coffee break and some fuel and arrived at Lulworth Cove Car Park around midday.

Parking Tip:

Get a full-day parking ticket that covers both Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. It saves you from queuing again later – especially useful in peak seasons when the Durdle Door lot fills up fast. The parking cost is £20 for a whole day.

Lunch Stop: Finley’s Café

Before exploring, we grabbed some takeaway lunch from Finley’s Cafe, located just outside the Lulworth car park.

From there, it’s an easy 5-minute walk through Lulworth village to the beach. And let me tell you – the first glimpse of the pebble beach at Lulworth Cove is just jaw-dropping. Crystal-clear water, a horseshoe bay, and those epic Cliff side backdrops.

Scenic Walk: Stair Hole

We followed the trail on the right-hand side of the cove leading up to several viewpoints overlooking the cliffs. Not too steep, but wear proper walking shoes – it’s uneven in parts. Along the way, we stopped at Stair Hole, a natural limestone cove carved by centuries of erosion. It’s less visited but equally worth your time.

Stop 2: Durdle Door – Postcode: BH20 5PU

From Lulworth, you’ve got two choices:

1. Hike from Lulworth to Durdle Door (~30 mins, scenic but steep).
2. Drive to Durdle Door Car Park, then walk down to the arch (~20 mins).

We chose the drive-and-hike option to save time and energy for the viewpoints. The hike down is steep but well-paved and the visit is absolutely worth it.

We had a little picnic on the cliff overlooking the beach, watching waves crash through the arch. Bring snacks and stay a while. The famous limestone arch is even more dramatic in person.

Just to the left, explore Man O’ War Cove – it’s often quieter and just as photogenic.

Stay the Night: Hotel Collingwood, Bournemouth

Around 5:15 PM, we made our way to Bournemouth, about an hour’s drive from Durdle Door. We checked into Hotel Collingwood, which we booked for 2 nights. Affordable, clean, and just a 5-minute walk from Bournemouth Beach – it was the perfect base for exploring the rest of the Jurassic Coast.

By the time we arrived, we had just enough energy left for a relaxed walk along the beach and a well-earned dinner nearby.

Day 2: Steam Trains, Castles & Coastal Views

Stop 1: Corfe Castle Station – BH20 5EJ

We kicked off our day with a wholesome breakfast at the hotel. Then, we drove to Corfe Castle Station, but instead of taking the long inland route, we opted for the Sandbanks Ferry (Postcode: BH13 7QN), a convenient and time-saving choice. It departs every 20 minutes from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with a journey time of just ~10 minutes.

Once across, it was a scenic drive to Corfe Castle Station, which felt like stepping into a scene from Harry Potter. It’s a beautifully preserved station on the Swanage Railway, with regular steam trains running between Norden and Swanage.

We saw the 10:42 AM steam train from Norden – a great photo opportunity with Corfe Castle perfectly framed in the background. Always check the Swanage Railway timetable before visiting.

Stop 2: Corfe Castle Viewpoint (No Entry Needed)

From the opposite hill, we were treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of Corfe Castle. Even with cloudy skies, the scene was truly beautiful, especially with a steam train crossing in the background.

But if you have more time, I would definitely recommend visiting the castle as well, as it is over 1000 years old.

Stop 3: The Blue Pool – Dorset’s Hidden Gem

Next up was the magical Blue Pool, known for its colour-changing waters that shift with the light and angle. The site was once a clay pit, but now features peaceful nature trails, a rope bridge, and a charming tearoom.

We enjoyed our lunch here, surrounded by tranquil woodland and shimmering waters. The Blue Pool is one of those serene spots that still feels like a local secret, a perfect place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Did You Know? The Blue Pool opened to the public in 1935 and is rich in both geological and cultural history.

Stop 4: Old Harry Rocks

Drive Time from Blue Pool: ~12 minutes

We wrapped up our day with a visit to the iconic Old Harry Rocks, one of the most photographed places on the Jurassic Coast.

Important: Only use South Beach Car Park as your destination. Google Maps will mislead you to a few dead ends (we learned that the hard way).

From the car park, it’s a flat 30-minute walk to the cliffs. There’s also a toilet about 100 m into the trail – super handy if you’ve been driving all day. The walk itself is lined with panoramic views of Bournemouth, Swanage Bay, and even the Isle of Wight on a clear day. Luckily, the weather cleared up just as we arrived, giving us golden sunlight over the chalk cliffs.

Return to Bournemouth

After enjoying Old Harry Rocks, we returned to our hotel via the same Sandbanks Ferry route. If you’re not too tired and still craving the sea breeze, consider stopping at Shell Bay or Knoll Beach – quieter alternatives that offer peaceful sunset strolls.

Day 3: Bournemouth Beach and Goodbye Views

Day 3 of our Dorset road trip was all about soaking in the seaside vibes of Bournemouth before heading back to London. While the itinerary was more relaxed compared to previous days, it gave us time to unwind, explore beach side gems, and end our trip on a relaxed note.

If you’re short on time or have a train to catch, this half-day Bournemouth itinerary is the perfect way to wrap up your weekend in Dorset.

Stop 1: Bournemouth Beach

The beach was already buzzing with early walkers, joggers, and families setting up for a sunny day. We took a slow stroll along the soft golden sands, admired the classic beach huts in pastel colors, and snapped a few final photos. What we loved most was how clean and lively the entire beachfront felt – it’s got that old-school British seaside charm but with enough modern cafes and chill spots.

At the heart of the beach lies the Bournemouth Pier, a great place for a relaxed walk with sea views. If you’re traveling with kids or just feeling adventurous, there’s also a mini amusement park and PierZip – a zip line that literally runs from the pier out over the water.

Optional: Sandbanks Detour (If Time Allows)

If you’re in no rush to return to London, I highly recommend driving down to Sandbanks Beach. It’s only about 15 minutes from Bournemouth, and the area is famous for:

• Its ultra-clear waters
• Millionaire’s row – home to some of the UK’s most expensive houses
• Uncrowded, scenic beach walks

It’s a peaceful spot that contrasts nicely with the lively vibe of Bournemouth.

Heading Back to London

As we had a fixed time to return to London, we started our journey home just after our beach visit. The drive from Bournemouth to London typically takes around 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic. If you’re returning a rental car, we recommend padding in extra time for drop-off and fuel.

What is Mont Saint-Michel famous for?

Mont Saint-Michel is best known for its breathtaking abbey that sits high on a rocky island, surrounded by the sea. It looks like something out of a fairytale – especially when the tide rises and makes it feel completely cut off from the mainland.

People come from all over the world to see the medieval streets, climb to the top for amazing views, and watch the tides come in and out (they’re some of the fastest in Europe!). The island has been a place of pilgrimage for over a thousand years and is now one of France’s most visited landmarks.

The abbey at Mont Saint-Michel is said to have inspired the castle in Disney’s Tangled. If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll definitely recognize the dramatic island setting.

How to reach Mont Saint-Michel

From London

The easiest way to reach Mont Saint-Michel is by flying. There’s a direct flight from London to Rennes Airport, which takes just around 50 minutes. From Rennes, you have two main options:

By bus : If you’re only planning to visit Mont Saint-Michel, taking the bus is a convenient choice. Look for Keolis bus number 9, which goes directly from Rennes to Mont Saint-Michel in about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

By car : Ideal if you want to explore more of the beautiful Normandy region. Renting a car gives you the freedom to stop at charming villages, beaches, and countryside spots along the way.

From Paris

Getting to Mont Saint-Michel from Paris is simple and makes for a great day trip or weekend escape. The best way is to take the train from Paris Montparnasse to Pontorson-Mont-Saint-Michel, with a quick change at Rennes. The total journey takes around 3.5 to 4 hours. Once you arrive at Pontorson, you can hop on the shuttle bus (Line 15) that takes you straight to Mont Saint-Michel in about 20 minutes.

Once you reach the area, you’ll need to park your car at the official Mont Saint-Michel parking lot, which is located on the mainland – about 2.5 kilometres (1.5 miles) from the island itself. The parking area is well signposted and called Le Parc du Mont-Saint-Michel. From there, take a free shuttle or enjoy a scenic 40-minute walk across the causeway!

What to do in Mont Saint-Michel

As soon as you enter the island, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Start by wandering the Narrow cobbled streets, they are full of charm – with little shops, cafés, and old stone buildings. It can get a bit crowded during the day, but that’s part of the lively atmosphere. Early morning or late afternoon is perfect for peaceful walks and photos.

At the very top of the island sits the Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel, the highlight of any visit. The path up is quite steep with lots of steps, but the views are totally worth it. The abbey is over 1,000 years old and full of history. Inside, you’ll find huge stone halls, peaceful cloisters, and incredible views over the bay.

Mont Saint-Michel Photo spots

There are plenty of great photo spots around Mont Saint-Michel, including one Instagram-famous location that’s easy to miss! To make sure you capture the best shots, here are some top photo spots you won’t want to skip.

From the Bridge

This is the main walkway that connects the mainland to Mont Saint-Michel. Just walk along the bridge, and you’ll get amazing wide views of the abbey – perfect for sunrise or sunset.

Low Tide Beach

When the tide is low, you can walk on the sand around the mount. Once you reach the abbey, you can walk off the bridge towards the right side and take photos from the sand. Also, the bay is known for the quicksands. So, If the tide is low, you can take a tour of the bay and experience the quicksand for yourself.

With the Meanders

This is one of the most famous view of Mont Saint Michel yet very few people know how to find this spot. As you walk towards the abbey from the mainland, you’ll see a fenced area on the right side of the road. It might look like you’re not allowed to go past it, but walking there is allowed. Keep walking for about 15 minutes, and you’ll reach a spot where you can see the S-shaped stream leading to Mont Saint-Michel.

From the Fields

When you are walking towards the meanders, you get pretty good shots of the abbey with the fields. If you go during the sunrise, you will find herd of sheep grazing in the fields which makes the view even more magical. We didn’t get to see the sheep but we still loved talking pictures of the abbey from here.

From the Restaurant

This restaurant on the mainland offers beautiful views of Mont Saint-Michel through its large windows. It’s part of the hotel called Le Relais du Mont Saint-Michel, making it a great spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the scenery.

Where to stay in Mont Saint-Michel?

The best way to experience Mont Saint-Michel is to stay nearby, so you can enjoy the magical sunrise and sunset views without the crowds. Here are some great hotel options for your stay.

Le Relais Saint Michel :I strongly recommend staying overnight at Mont-Saint-Michel for a truly unique experience. We stayed at Le Relais Saint Michel, which offers some of the best views of the abbey from many of its rooms.

Mercure Mont Saint-Michel : Approximately 2.5 km from Mont Saint-Michel with comfortable rooms, free area shuttles and complimentary self-parking.

Auberge Saint-Pierre: charming and historic hotel located right on Mont Saint-Michel itself.

La Mère Poulard: It’s a restaurant and hotel on Mont Saint-Michel, open since 1879. It’s known for its wall filled with autographs from guests over the years.

If you’re planning a 3-day trip to Tromsø in winter, this guide will help you enjoy your time and see all the important places in the area. From chasing the Northern Lights to silent whale watching cruises, keep reading to find out about the exciting adventures waiting for you in Tromsø!

How to get to Tromsø?

The best and easy way to get to Tromso is by flight. There are direct flights to Tromsø from London Gatwick Airport and London Luton Airport. Or if you are combining Tromso with other Norwegian regions than you can take connecting flights from Oslo or Bergen.

If you are travelling from London then keep an eye out for the Northern lights. And if you are lucky, you will get to see the Northern lights mid air from the flight and let me tell you it is as magical to see it from the flight as it is from the land

Day 1 : Silent Whale Watching Tour

Winter in Tromsø is truly magical, and one of the main reasons we decided to visit during this season is to see the majestic whales. The best time for whale watching in northern Norway is from November to January, when you can spot many Orcas , Humpback whales and Sperm whales. These whales come to this region to feed on herring (Herring is a small fish that serves as a primary food source for whales). In the past, they were often seen in Tromsø harbour, but now they’ve moved further north to a place called Skervøy. So, to see them we booked a Silent whale watching tour with Brim explorer.

It is really important for an ethical partner to be chosen when looking to participate in wildlife activities, as the boats maintain their distance and do not interfere with the whales behaviour. One of the main reasons for choosing Brim Explorer is that they are eco-friendly, utilising a silent hybrid-electric engine.

The tour typically runs from 8 AM to 5 PM, providing a full day of adventure on the water. The boat has two indoor saloons with a cafe onboard so you can stay inside in a cosy atmosphere and enjoy the view. During the tour, knowledgeable guides provide fascinating insights about the whales behaviours, migration patterns, and the significance of conservation efforts. Once the boat reaches the island, the guides will also tell you how to spot the whales from far. Overall, we really loved the experience and it was definitely one of the best things to do in Tromso.

Day 2: Tromsø Harbour, Fjellheisen Cable Car, Arctic Cathedral & Northern lights tour

Tromsø Harbour

Start your day early at Tromsø Harbour. We arrived around 9 AM, and the city was glowing in a beautiful blue hue during the blue hour. Our first stop was Kaffebønna, a popular café in Tromsø, where we enjoyed a delicious breakfast. I would highly recommend to try their Cinnamon bun and Brunost, a norweigan style waffle with brown cheese.

After breakfast, take a stroll along Tromsø Harbour, a lively waterfront with stunning views of the Arctic landscape. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and colourful buildings, it’s a picture-perfect spot for photos, especially during sunrise or sunset. If you have time, visit the Polar Museum nearby.

Keep walking along the harbour, and you’ll come across a stunning mosaic structure called Porten til Ishavet (Gateway to the Arctic). Its design perfectly frames the Arctic Cathedral in the background, creating a breathtaking and picture-perfect view.

Fjellheisen Cable Car

For the best view of Tromsø, I highly recommend taking the Fjellheisen cable car up to Storsteinen Mountain. From the top, you’ll get a breathtaking panoramic view of the city, especially during winter when the sky transforms into stunning shades of pink, blue, and deep twilight over a few hours. As night falls, the town below starts to twinkle, creating a magical scene.

The round-trip ticket costs 545 NOK (£45), and once you’re at the top, you can warm up at Fjellstua Café, where you can enjoy a hot drink or a bite to eat while soaking in the incredible Arctic views.

Arctic Cathedral

This is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, known for its striking modern design inspired by Arctic ice and nature. Its huge glass mosaic window is a highlight, especially when lit up at night. It costs 75 NOK (£5.50) per person to enter the cathedral, and it’s worth stepping inside to see the beautiful interior and peaceful atmosphere.

Northern Lights Tour

A trip to Tromsø in winter wouldn’t be complete without a Northern Lights tour. You can either chase the lights on your own or join a guided tour – it’s totally up to you. Since it was our first time and we didn’t have a car, we chose to go on a tour for a hassle-free experience.

We did some research and booked the Northern Lights Tour with Free Professional Portrait. These tours can last 7 to 10 hours, as sometimes you need to drive all the way to the Finland border to find clear skies. Luckily, our guide was very experienced, and we didn’t have to go too far from Tromsø to see the lights.

At first, we could only see a faint green glow through the phone’s camera, but after an hour, the lights grew stronger. Suddenly, a solar flare appeared right above us – it was absolutely magical! Though the flare lasted only a few minutes, Lady Aurora kept dancing across the sky for hours. We even enjoyed a bonfire under the lights, sipping local blueberry juice and eating cake – an unforgettable experience!

Day 3: Tromsø Town Centre & Reindeer Sledding Tour with a Sami guide

Tromsø Town

Start your day with breakfast at Backstube Café, then explore Tromsø on foot – it’s easy to walk around the city. We visited some shops for souvenirs and stopped by the Tromsø Visitor Centre, where we found a special Polar Certificate. This unique souvenir costs 150 NOK and certifies that you have “conquered the Arctic” – a great memory of your trip!

Here are some other interesting places to visit in Tromsø city centre:

• Tiniest Bar in the Universe – Raketten Bar & pølse
• Northern Most McDonald’s in the world

Reindeer Sledding

End your Tromsø trip with a magical reindeer sledding and feeding experience. You’ll be picked up from Tromsø bus station and taken to a reindeer farm, where you can see these beautiful animals up close.

The experience starts with a 30 minute reindeer sledding ride, followed by a chance to feed the reindeer, which was one of the highlights for me! After spending time with them, you’ll head into a cozy Sami tent (lavvu), where you’ll be served hot chocolate, coffee, and a warm meal.

The tour also includes a fascinating introduction to Sami culture, the indigenous people of Northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Inside a warm yurt, you’ll learn about their history, traditions, and connection to reindeer herding – making this experience both fun and educational. Looking for a tour recommendation? Have a little longer?

We only had a few days in Tromsø, but if you have more time, I highly recommend trying some of these activities:

Husky experience with Self drive Dog sled ride : This is another incredible and unique adventure in Tromsø! You’ll get to meet and bond with friendly huskies before setting off on a self-drive dog sledding ride through the stunning Arctic landscape. Steering your own sled across the snow is both thrilling and unforgettable.

Arctic Floating in Tromsø : I really wanted to try this, but unfortunately, my schedule didn’t allow it. However, it’s definitely a one-of-a-kind experience that I highly recommend! You’ll float in the icy Arctic waters wearing a special thermal dry suit that keeps you warm and dry.

Snowmobiling Tour : Experience the thrill of driving your own snowmobile through Arctic wilderness

Snowshoeing Hike : Explore the stunning Arctic wilderness on a guided snowshoeing hike from Tromsø. Enjoy the beautiful views of mountains and fjords, and relax with a light lunch in a peaceful spot.

Relax at Sauna Pust Tromsø : Sauna Pust offers a unique experience that combines relaxation and adventure. You can enjoy the warmth of a traditional sauna before taking a refreshing plunge into the icy waters of Tromsø Harbour, where the temperature can be around 0°C. This creates a unique atmosphere, with beautiful twilight hues and a chance to witness the Northern Lights. Despite the cold and darkness, the city has a magical charm, making it a special time to explore the Arctic landscape.

Borșa is beautiful all year round, but it’s especially magical in winter. It’s the perfect place for ski lovers and very budget-friendly too. In this blog, I’ll share the best places to visit and things to do during a 3-day trip to Borșa.

How to travel to Borsa

Getting from London to Borsa may seem tricky but with a little planning, it’s doable.

Nearest Airport to Borsa: Cluj-Napoca (CLJ)

You can book direct flights from London to Cluj-Napoca, which take approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes. Flights from London are quite frequent and usually very affordable. We booked our round-trip flight for about £30 in March 2024.

Once you land in Romania, you’ll need to travel to Borșa by road. Here are your options:

From Cluj-Napoca (Approx. 3–4 hours)

1. Car Rental: The easiest and most flexible way to travel. Roads are well-maintained, and you’ll enjoy scenic views of the Carpathian Mountains.
   • Rental agencies are available at the airport.
   • Use GPS or Google Maps to guide you through the route.
2. Public Transport:
   • Take a bus or train from Cluj-Napoca to Vatra Dornei or Sighetu Marmației, then connect to Borșa via a local bus or taxi.
   • Direct buses to Borșa may be available from Cluj; check schedules locally or online.

Although public transport is available, I recommend hiring a car as it is much more convenient and better for getting around the Maramures region.

Day 1: Horses’ Waterfall, Borșa Ski Resort Telegondola

Wake up bright and early, because this will be a fun-filled day! Have breakfast at the hotel and then go to one of Borșa’s most iconic natural attractions, Horses’ Waterfall (Cascada Cailor). This is Romania’s tallest waterfall and It’s stunning as water flows down the cliffs, surrounded by lush greenery or snow, depending on the season. To reach the waterfall, you need to take Telescaun Cascada Cailor(chairlift) from the base station. The chairlift ride is stunning offering incredible views of the surrounding. Once you reach the top, there’s a short but scenic hike (about 30 minutes) to the waterfall. The hike to the waterfall especially during the snow felt like we were walking in a winter wonderland.

After the hike, you’ll probably be hungry. For lunch, you can either return to your hotel or visit a nearby homestay called Stana Runcul Stiol, close to the chairlift. It’s run by a couple who also operate a small lunch spot serving traditional Romanian food with a great view.

After Lunch, make your way to Borșa Ski Resort Telegondola, a modern cable car that takes you up the slopes, offering spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. This is a fantastic activity, especially if you’re not into hiking but still want to soak in Borșa’s breathtaking scenery. The ride takes you up to about 1,200 meters, where you can enjoy fresh mountain air and stunning views of the Rodna Mountains. In winter, it’s a popular skiing spot, but it’s also a peaceful and scenic place in other seasons. You can explore easy walking paths near the top or just relax and take photos.

Day 2: The Roots Museum, Prislop Pass, Monastery Pietroasa

Start your day at the Roots Museum (Muzeul Rădăcinilor). This special place features sculptures made from natural roots, blending art and nature. Each piece tells a story, showcasing the creativity and traditions of the Maramureș region.

Tip: It’s a small museum, so you won’t need more than an hour to explore it.

Prislop Pass

After the Roots Museum, head to Prislop Pass which is a picturesque and highest mountain road pass in Romania that connects Maramureș with Bucovina. It’s a beautiful spot to visit especially in early summer and in winter. In winter, you can rent a snowmobile from local guides who offer tours of the area. Riding through the fresh snow, with the cold air and the Carpathian peaks around you, is an unforgettable experience.

After your snowmobile ride, enjoy lunch at Pensiunea Pasul Prislop, a cosy restaurant right at the pass. The restaurant has a rustic atmosphere with large windows that offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Monastery Pietroasa

After your time at Prislop Pass, head to a peaceful and spiritual monastery which is just a short drive from Borșa and is worth a visit. The monastery complex includes a beautiful wooden church, a two-story building for the nuns’ quarters and workshops, a summer altar, and the spiritual father’s house. The wooden church, built in the traditional Maramureș style, is a place of prayer and reflection for the community and visitors alike. The nuns here are known for their craftsmanship, creating icons and priestly garments in their workshops.

Is There Any Charge?

There is no entrance fee to visit Monastery Pietroasa. However, donations are always appreciated as they help maintain the monastery and support the nuns’ work.

Day 3: Exploring Maramures region

Today, you’ll explore the beautiful Maramureș region outside Borșa. This area offers one of the most authentic rural experiences in Romania, preserving its traditions. You’ll also discover the spiritual side of the locals and visit some fascinating monasteries, including a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Barsana Monastery

Nestled in the heart of Maramureș, Bârsana Monastery is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring this beautiful region. Known for its stunning wooden architecture, the monastery is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Maramureș. The church of the old monastery was relocated and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, adding to its historical significance.

As you step into the monastery complex, a traditional Maramureș gate greets you, inviting you to explore further. Walking through, you’ll find yourself drawn to the bell tower and the main church. Every part of the structure is made of wood, a testament to the remarkable craftsmanship that defines this region. The complex also includes a summer altar, nuns’ cells, and a chapel, each adding to the serene and spiritual atmosphere. One of the most enchanting aspects of Bârsana Monastery is the soothing music that plays throughout the compound. This gentle music enhances the peaceful ambience, making your visit even more memorable. The beauty of the monastery, combined with the tranquil sounds, creates a truly magical experience.

The Merry Cemetery of Săpânța

This was the most unique cemetery I have ever visited. Located in the village of Săpânța, the Merry Cemetery is one of Romania’s most unusual and fascinating attractions. Unlike typical cemeteries, this one is known for its brightly coloured tombstones adorned with naïve paintings and humorous epitaphs. Each tombstone tells the story of the person buried there, often in a light-hearted and poetic manner. This unique approach to remembering the deceased has turned the cemetery into an open-air museum and a national tourist attraction.

Each tombstone features funny stories, but one, dedicated to a Mother-in-law, is especially famous. If you are hiring a guide, they can tell you all about what’s written here or you can use Google translate but it is worth a visit.

Săpânța-Peri Monastery

Just a short distance from the Merry Cemetery, you’ll find the Săpânța-Peri Monastery, home to the tallest wooden church in the world. Built in 1997, this impressive structure stands 78 meters high and is a testament to the craftsmanship of the region. The monastery was established to revive the historical tradition of the old Peri Monastery, whose ruins are now in Ukraine. The monastery complex includes a beautiful wooden church, a summer altar, and living quarters for the nuns. The serene atmosphere and the breathtaking architecture make it a must-visit destination in Maramureș.

Sighet Memorial Museum

This will be the last pit stop for Day 3. Located in the town of Sighetu Marmației, the Memorial of the Victims of Communism and the Resistance is a poignant reminder of Romania’s turbulent past. This memorial honours the millions who suffered under communist regimes, providing a space for reflection and remembrance.

The memorial complex features a museum in a former prison, where communist-era authorities detained many political prisoners. The museum is open daily, and there is a small entrance fee to help maintain the site and support its educational programs.

The Pauper’s Cemetery – Necropolis of the Tombless

After the museum, head to the Pauper’s Cemetery also known as Necropolis of the Tombless. The cemetery is the final resting place for many political and religious prisoners who were executed in the nearby prison. These individuals were buried without markers, their graves unmarked and their stories nearly forgotten.

One of the most striking features of the cemetery is the modern tower that visitors can climb. From the top, you can view a map of Romania outlined in hedges and trees, symbolizing the unity and resilience of the nation. 

Other places to visit

There are other places to visit in Maramures which you can consider if you have more time on your hands. Few guided tours happen in Maramures and you can book the tours from the tourist office in Borsa. These are the few guided tours available at present.

Borșa offers a variety of cosy accommodations, from boutique hotels to charming guesthouses, all surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. While there are many lovely options to choose from, I want to share my personal experience staying at Hotel Roman Maramures – Ski & Spa Resort, which was right in the heart of Borsa.

We stayed in this beautiful spa hotel and my room had a balcony that overlooked the stunning Rodna Mountains. Waking up to the sight of snow-covered peaks in the winter was magical. It felt like I was staying in a postcard. The hotel also had spa facilities which was a lifesaver after a day of exploring the mountains. We relaxed in the sauna, enjoyed a soothing massage, and even took a dip in their indoor pool. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and recharge.

Top Harry Potter locations to visit in Scotland

1. Edinburgh

You can’t talk about Harry Potter without mentioning Edinburgh as it is the birthplace of Harry Potter. But was Harry Potter filmed in Edinburgh? The answer is no but J.K. Rowling did write the book while living here and some of the character names are also inspired from this magical city.

So here are the few places that you must check out while visiting Edinburgh:

• The Elephant House Café – This is the birthplace of Harry Potter as Rowling wrote some of her very first books here. But sadly the café caught fire 3 years ago so it is temporary closed for restoration.
• Black Medicine Coffee Co – J.K. Rowling wrote a lot of the first book here. Well, not exactly in this café – this café was called Nicolson’s café before. There is a black plaque outside the building stating that “J.K. Rowling wrote some of the early chapters of Harry Potter in the rooms on the first floor of this building”.
• Greyfriars Kirkyard cemetery – This is a very famous graveyard in Edinburgh and and most of the Harry Potter characters were actually inspired from this place. Sounds weird right!! but it is true, in this graveyard you will find graves of people with Names like Thomas Riddell, William McGonagall, Elizabeth Moodie which is said to have inspired few of the famous characters in the book like Tom Riddle (Lord Voldemort), Minerva McGonagall and Alastor Moody (Mad eye Moody) respectively.
• Balmoral Hotel – She wrote the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in Room 552 of this Hotel and the hotel has now named this room as ‘J. K. Rowling suite’ and you can book this room to spend the night (which is not cheap btw)

2. Glenfinnan Viaduct

This was the very first place I wanted to visit after arriving in Scotland but it took me 4 years to come here. But If you are planning a road trip to Scotland then you should definitely add this place to your list.

The viaduct was first featured in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets where Ron stole the flying Ford Anglia with Harry to catch up with the train and they nearly got hit as they were flying just above the bridge. The bridge was featured again in Prisoner of Azkaban and the Goblet of Fire .

There is dedicated parking if you want to visit this viaduct and from there it is just a short walk to the viewpoint. The nearest parking spot is Glenfinnan Visitor Centre car park but that gets full pretty quickly but no need to worry, there is another parking spot just next to the visitor centre.

3. Loch Shiel

If you are planning to go to Glenfinnan viaduct, you should definitely visit Loch Shiel which is right next to Glenfinnan Visitor centre close to the Glenfinnan monument. This is the famous Hogwarts lake or Black lake which was featured in many of the Harry Potter movies. My favourite shot of this lake was the underwater task of the Triwizard Tournament in the Goblet of fire.

4. Jacobite Steam train – Hogwarts Express

It’s a dream of every Potterhead to ride the Hogwarts express one day which will take you to Hogwarts and I was one of them. So, this was the very first thing I did when I went to Scotland for the first time.

The Hogwarts Express, as we know it, is actually the Jacobite Train. It travels 84 miles between Fort William and Mallaig on the beautiful West Highland Railway Line. This train existed long before it became a dream journey for Harry Potter fans.

You can expect to see many scenic highlights on this magical train journey, some of them includes Britain’s highest summit – Ben Nevis, Europe’s deepest seawater lake – Loch Nevis and few harry potter movie locations like Loch Shiel, Loch Eilt and Eilean Na Moine island.

Hogwarts Express travel tips

The Hogwarts express runs seven days a week from April to October. From April to October, there will be at least one morning service each day which departs Fort William at 10.15 am and arrives Mallaig at 12.26. Additionally, from May to September, both morning and afternoon services will be available where the afternoon service departs Fort William at 12.50 and arrives Mallaig at 15.06.

Tickets cost £65 for a standard adult day return and £89 for first class.

Note that there are no one-way tickets. The Hogwarts Express is only a return journey. However, there are multiple tour operators in Scotland which offers one way journey of train in addition to the Scottish Highlands tour. You can check the tour details below:

5. Hagrid’s Hut

The filming location for Hagrid’s Hut is in the stunning Glencoe, Scotland. Although the hut will not be there but you can still visit the filming location and rest, you can leave it up to your imagination.

Here is how you can visit the filming location. This location is best covered by car where you need to drive towards the Clachaig Inn, a well-known landmark in Glencoe. From the inn, it’s a 5 min walk to the location. Note that the parking in the hotel car park is normally for hotel guests or those visitors who are stopping for their bar and restaurant facilities.

Once you park your car, exit the Inn and turn left. Almost immediately, you’ll see a small footpath on your right. Follow this path and soon you will reach the top of the hillside. This is where you will find Hagrid’s hut.

Once you have enjoyed this spot, you can climb further up to discover the spot where they built the Sundial Garden. This is where the standing stones are located, and it’s the iconic place where Hermione punches Draco in the face.

6. Steall Falls

Steall Falls is Scotland’s second-highest waterfall, with a dramatic 120-meter (390 feet) drop. Known in Gaelic as “An Steall Bàn” or “The White Spout,” this breath taking waterfall is a must-visit for nature lovers and Harry Potter fans alike.

It appeared in several movies, most notably in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, where it serves as the backdrop for the Triwizard Tournament and various Quidditch matches.

Visiting Steall Falls is an adventure in itself, offering a rewarding hike through some of Scotland’s most beautiful scenery. The hike to Steall Falls is a relatively short but moderately challenging walk, taking about 1.5 to 2 hours round trip. The trail begins at the car park (postcode mentioned below) and winds through the picturesque Nevis Gorge, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the cascading waterfall.

7. Dumbledore’s Grave

This place was very emotional for me and I am sure it will be the same for all Potterhead. This is the same place where Dumbledore was buried after his death in Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince and where Voldemort stole the Elder wand.

If you’re taking the Jacobite steam train, you might catch a glimpse of this spot from the train. However, if you’d like to visit it yourself, you can use the postcode provided below. The island is just a 15-minute drive from the Glenfinnan Viaduct, making it an ideal quick stop. While there’s no dedicated parking, there is a small parking area nearby where you can park and walk for about 2 minutes to reach the island.

8. Rannoch Moor

Rannoch Moor is a vast, boggy expanse known for its rugged beauty and unique ecosystem. This remote area, often referred to as “the last place of wilderness in Britain,” spans 50 square miles and is characterized by its blanket bogs, peat swamps, and desolate landscapes.

Rannoch moor holds a special place in Harry Potter series. It is the same place where Death eaters stopped the Hogwarts express in their search for Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. The best way to reach Rannoch Moor is by car and you can use the below postcode to reach the viewpoint where the movie was filmed.

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park

Loch Lomond is the largest freshwater lake in Britain surrounded by rolling hills and rugged mountains. There are so many things to do here and you could easily spend 3-4 days to a week exploring the national park but If you just have one day or few hours to spend, you should definitely explore some of the picturesque villages like the one below.

Luss

One of the most picturesque spots in Loch Lomond National Park is the charming village of Luss. Located on the western shore of Loch Lomond, Luss is a delightful escape with its quaint cottages, beautifully kept gardens, and stunning views of the loch. Strolling through the village feels like stepping back in time, with its traditional stone houses and narrow lanes.

Luss offers plenty of activities to enjoy. You can wander along the scenic pier, take a boat tour to explore the loch’s many islands, or relax on the small sandy beach. The village also boasts a historic church, Luss Parish Church, dating back to the 19th century, with its tranquil graveyard and fascinating history.

If you love a good walk, the Luss Heritage Path is a must. Falls of Falloch

Technically, Falls of Falloch is not part of Argyll council but it was on our list from very long time and was very close to where we stayed.

The Falls of Falloch is a beautiful 30-foot waterfall near Loch Lomond. It’s peaceful here, and the sound of the falls is calming. Although popular among locals, it remains a hidden gem in the UK. It is a short and easy walk from the car park and is perfect for a picnic, a refreshing dip, or enjoying nature.

Adding to the charm of Falls of Falloch is the Woven Sound installation, an artistic structure designed by John Kennedy. This unique piece features woven steel rods forming a caged walkway that guides visitors to a viewing platform. From here, you can enjoy unobstructed views of the waterfall and its surroundings.

Kilchurn Castle

Kilchurn Castle (pronounced as Kill-urn) is a picturesque and historic castle located on the shores of Loch Awe. Built in the 15th century, it offers stunning views and a fascinating glimpse into Scotland’s past.

It’s undoubtedly one of the most picturesque castles in Scotland. You can also visit the castle ruins from the parking lot (although it’s not signposted) and then walk under the railway bridge.

Walking up to the castle is not the best way to see and take those scenic pictures. To get those scenic views, you need to head to this point but be aware the field is full of livestock and the route can be a little wet.

Inveraray

Inveraray is a charming town on the west shore of Loch Fyne, known for its rich history and stunning scenery. Founded in the 18th century by the Duke of Argyll, it features lovely Georgian buildings.

While Inveraray is a small town, there are plenty of things you can do here and one of the must visit places I would recommend will be Inveraray Castle.

Inveraray Castle

Inveraray Castle is a grand and beautiful castle located in Inveraray. It’s the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll, the head of Clan Campbell. With its stunning architecture and lovely gardens, the castle is a great place to explore. Inside, you can see impressive rooms filled with historical artifacts and beautiful decorations.

Other places to visit in Inveraray are :

Inveraray Jail, Loch Fyne, Inveraray Bridge, Inveraray maritime heritage museum

Oban

Oban is one of the largest seaside town in the west coast of Scotland and is also known as “Gateway to the Isles”. It offers stunning views of the bay, vibrant seafood restaurants, and a rich history. With its bustling harbour, Oban is the main departure point for ferries to the Hebridean islands, making it an ideal base for exploring the region.

Places to visit:

McCaig’s Tower : It’s Oban’s very own Coliseum. You can either climb to the tower from the town centre or drive 5 mins from there. Once you are there, you will be awarded with a stunning views of the harbour and the Atlantic islands.

Other places to visit in Oban are :

Oban Distillery, Dunollie Museum, Ganavan sands

Castle Stalker

Castle Stalker is a picturesque medieval tower house located on a small islet in Loch Laich, off the west coast of Scotland near the town of Port Appin. It dates back to the 14th century and is one of Scotland’s best-preserved medieval tower houses, known for its stunning scenery and historical significance.

Castle stalker is hardly 20 mins drive from Oban and to enjoy the view, you can either go to Port Appin or visit the nearby Castle Stalker View Café. You can also book a boat tour through the Castle Stalker website for closer access.

Isle of Mull

The Isle of mull belongs to the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland and is known for its Charming seaside towns, scenic roads and beautiful beaches.

There are also several tours services from here that takes you to some beautiful Islands like Staffa, Lunga and Iona

One of the famous boat tour services are Staffa tours.

How to reach Isle of Mull?

Here are a few routes to reach the Isle of Mull:

1. From Oban to Craignure (Main Route)

Drive to Oban: If you’re starting from a location on the mainland, drive to Oban, which is a common departure point for the Isle of Mull.

Ferry from Oban to Craignure:

• The ferry service is operated by Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac).
• The ferry journey takes about 45 minutes.
• Ferries run frequently, but it’s advisable to book in advance during peak seasons.
• Address : Oban Ferry Terminal, Railway Pier, Oban, PA34 4DB.

2. From Lochaline to Fishnish

Drive to Lochaline: If you’re traveling from Fort William or further north, drive to Lochaline on the Morvern Peninsula.

Ferry from Lochaline to Fishnish:

• This is a shorter ferry crossing and takes about 15 minutes.
• Ferries are also operated by CalMac and are less busy than the Oban route.
• Address: Lochaline Ferry Terminal, Lochaline, PA80 5XT.

3. From Kilchoan to Tobermory

Drive to Kilchoan: This route is ideal if you’re exploring the Ardnamurchan Peninsula.

Ferry from Kilchoan to Tobermory:

• This ferry crossing takes about 35 minutes.
• Operated by CalMac, this route brings you directly to Tobermory, the main town on Mull.
• Address: Kilchoan Ferry Terminal, Kilchoan, PH36 4LH.

Important Tips

• Ferry Booking: It’s recommended to book ferry tickets in advance, especially during the summer months when tourist traffic is high.
• Timetables: Check the CalMac website for up-to-date ferry timetables and possible disruptions.

If you want to explore Isle of mull and near by isles without the hassle of driving, you can book the tours from West Coast Tours website.

They have multiple tour options available, the one we booked was Tobermory, Treshnish & Staffa Tour. The ticket includes ferry journeys, bus transfer and boat tours by Staffa tours.

Places to visit in Isle of Mull

The Isle of Mull is packed with beautiful and interesting places to visit. It offers a variety of stunning natural landscapes, historic sites, and charming villages to explore. Here are some of the top places to visit on the Isle of Mull:

Tobermory

Tobermory is the capital of Isle of Mull and is a charming town famous for its colourful waterfront houses. It’s a charming and picturesque place with a lively atmosphere.

Duart Castle

Duart Castle is a historic fortress located on the Isle of Mull. It overlooks the Sound of Mull and has been the ancestral home of the Clan Maclean for over 700 years. The castle is accessible by car from Craignure, where the main ferry terminal is located.

Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse

Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse, which means “Stranger’s Point” in Gaelic, is located near Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. The lighthouse offers a panoramic views of the sea and surrounding landscape. There is a popular walking trail from Tobermory to the lighthouse, which is about 2.5 miles (4 km) each way. The path takes you through beautiful woodland and along the coast.

Iona

A small island off the southwest coast of Mull, known for its religious history. You can visit Iona Abbey, the Nunnery, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Calgary Bay

It is a beautiful white sand beach on the northwest coast of Mull and is best for enjoying the scenic coastal views.

Isle of Staffa

Isle of Staffa is a small, uninhabited island famous for its volcanic rock formations. The island got its name from the Vikings due to its hexagonal columnar basalt, which reminded them of their houses made from vertically placed tree-logs. It looks quite similar to Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland as these unique rock formations were created by the same ancient volcanic activity.

Despite being one of the smallest islands, Staffa is renowned for its unique rock formations, created by volcanic activity, particularly the famous Fingal’s Cave, often featured on social media. Depending on the sea conditions, you can get close to or walk on Staffa. Unfortunately, we couldn’t due to rough waves, and could only admire Fingal’s Cave from a distance while on the boat. 

If you go there between April – August, you will be able to see puffins and other wildlife there and occasionally, seals can be spotted on the nearby rocks.

Isle of Lunga

One of my favourite memories from this trip was our trip to Isle of Lunga.

The Isle of Lunga, the largest of the Treshnish Isles in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, is a breath-taking place with volcanic origins. Known as ‘a green jewel in a peacock sea‘, it’s a paradise for nature lovers. After visiting Fingal’s Cave, we took a 20-25 minute ferry ride to Lunga. If you visit between late April – August, you will be able to see varieties of birds especially Puffins. Seeing thousands of puffins so close was like a dream come true. We also spotted guillemots, European shags, razorbills, and many other birds. One of the best parts was Harp Rock, a sea stack filled with breeding birds. It felt like stepping into a nature documentary.

Duntrune Castle

Duntrune Castle is one of the oldest continuously occupied castles in Scotland, with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. It is still privately owned by the Malcolm family. While the castle is privately owned, you can still enjoy the views of the surrounding area.

NOTE: When we saw pictures of the castle on Instagram, we were eager to visit. However, we found limited information on social media. As I mentioned earlier, the castle is privately owned, and the access roads are also private property. We spoke with some locals who informed us that we could follow the private road to a parking area for the gardens. While the gardens were pleasant for a short walk, I’m unsure if the visit to the castle itself is worthwhile, as the only photo opportunity is the one shown below.

Arundel Castle has a long and rich history, and is often referred to as an “enchanted castle.” The castle was first built in the 11th century and has been the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk for over 850 years. Throughout its history, the castle has been the site of many significant events and has played a prominent role in English history.

How to get to Arundel Castle from London

By Train

To get to Arundel Castle from book London, you can take the train from London Victoria to Arundel Station. The journey takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes. From the station, it is a short walk to the castle.

By Car

To reach Arundel Castle by car from London, you can take the M25 motorway and then join the A24 towards Arundel. Follow the signs for Arundel Castle. The journey should take around 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

What to do in Arundel Castle

Once you reach the castle, you will soon start getting the fairytale vibes from the outside. The castle and the gardens are huge so to cover all of them properly, you can follow the following itinerary

• Take a tour of the castle’s interior to begin your visit. You can tour the opulent state rooms, which include the great hall, drawing room, and library. Along with the gorgeous chapel, you’ll be able to tour the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk’s private residences.
• Then head outside and look around the castle’s grounds. The gorgeous gardens, which include the Wildflower Meadow and the Italian Garden with its collection of Renaissance sculptures, are perfect for strolling through. Check out the terrace as well, which provides fantastic views of the castle and the surrounding area.
• After exploring the gardens, take a walk around the castle’s Keep. The Keep is the highest point of castle and it offer great views of the castle and the town of Arundel, and they are also home to a small museum that tells the story of the castle’s history.

After visiting the castle, if you have some time left then you can explore the beautiful town of Arundel and visit their antique shops and pubs. The town has plenty cute little shops where you can find lots of hand made products.

Day 1 – Detailed Itinerary

Grand Place

Once you reach the city, this place should be on top of your list. Grand place is considered to be the most beautiful square in the world and it is labelled as UNESCO World Heritage site for its remarkably homogeneous look.

Manneken Pis

After Grand Place, this should be your next stop to see. This is where you will find a small statue of a little peeing boy. You won’t be spending too much time here but it is still worth a visit. This statue has been a symbol of Brussels for ages and at certain times, the boy gets dressed in colourful outfits which is so cute!!!

Also once in a year, the boy pees beer too

Les Galeries saint Hubert

Royal Gallery of Saint Hubert (Les Galeries saint Hubert) is a very famous shopping arcade in Brussels and it is one of first shopping arcades built in Europe in 1847. The distinct architecture of the gallery and the glass roof is highly admirable and it still hosts some of the special shops, café and famous chocolatiers.

Place Sainte Catherine

Place Sainte-Catherine is one of the iconic places of the city and is very famous among tourists as well as locals. The area is full of exotic restaurants and there is a pond right in the centre where you can just hang out.

Square du Petit Sablon

This place was not in my itinerary and I accidently found this spot while walking in the city. The flower garden of square du Petit Sablon is an architectural gem right opposite the Church of Our Lady of the Sablon. A fountain statue stands in the garden, surrounded by benches where you can enjoy the sunny weather or take a rest after all the walks around the city.

Belgian comic strip center

A museum dedicated to Belgian comics, the Belgium Comic Strip Center showcases the rich history and culture of Belgian comics. The museum hosts both permanent and temporary exhibitions. The famous characters like Tintin and Smurfs will lead your way to the adventures and I would highly recommend to visit this place if you have more time in your hand.

Mont Des arts

Mont des arts is one of the most beautiful place to visit in the city. It connects the lower town with upper town. The Mont des Arts is a cultural and tourist complex in Brussels, Belgium, featuring a garden, terraces, and several museums and cultural institutions. It offers a panoramic view of the city and is a popular spot for visitors and locals alike.

Jeanneke Pis

Similar to Manneken Pis, Jeanneke Pis is a statue of a little girl squatting and urinating in the fountain.

Delirium Village

When you walk to see Jeanneke Pis, you will enter an alley known as Delirium Village. This alley is part of the Delirium Cafe chain, famous for its selection of over 3,000 varieties of beer, which is the largest in the world. After a tiring day of exploring the city, this place is best to relax and try their famous beers.

Mini Europe

Mini Europe is a miniature park in Brussels featuring scale models of famous European buildings and landmarks. It has over 350 miniature buildings and landmarks from all across the Europe

Atomium

The Atomium, considered the Eiffel tower of Brussels, serves as a major landmark in the city. It was built as a symbolic structure for the 1958 World’s fair. It is now a very popular tourist destination and also offers panoramic views of the city from the top sphere. The top sphere also has a restaurant which is little expensive but will be perfect for a special celebration. The Atomium is also a cultural center and hosts exhibitions, conferences and events

Basilique Nationale du Sacre coeur

National Basilica of Sacred Heart is a roman church with the 5th largest dome in the world. The church was constructed in the early 20th century, and it welcomes visitors every day. The Basilica also offers panoramic views of the city from its observation deck.

Parc du Cinquantenaire

Also known as Jubelpark is home to several important buildings including the Cinquantenaire museum and the Arc de Triomphe. The park offers a serene environment with lush greenery, various walking paths, picturesque gardens, and tranquil lakes, making it an ideal spot to unwind and take in the beauty of Brussels on a lovely day.

Where and What to Eat in Brussels

Brussels is a food lover’s paradise, offering a wide variety of delicious cuisine. Here are some must-try dishes and places to eat in Brussels:

1. Moules-frites (mussels and fries) – A classic Belgian dish, mussels are typically served in a creamy sauce with a side of crispy fries. Some of the best places to try them include Chez Leon, Aux Armes de Bruxelles, and Le Pain Quotidien.
2. Waffles – Brussels is famous for its waffles, which can be enjoyed plain or with a variety of toppings such as chocolate, fruit, or whipped cream. Some of the best places to try waffles include Maison Dandoy, Le Pain Quotidien, and Waffle Factory.

Note: Many street vendors uses Beef oil for the frites so if you are vegetarian(or have any religious restrictions), always make sure to ask the vendors if they also use vegetable oil.
